Old Douge shakes his head sadly. "I'm sorry, <<print $YourName>>, I'm not sure Hawthorne Academy of Incantations and Conjurations is right for you. You are standing in front of the Hawthorne Academy for Incantations and Conjurations. Some prankster has bewitched the final word in the sign to rotate to read Conjugations every time you look at it. But you know you're in the right place. \n\nHawthorne Academy is the best and hardest school for linguistical magic in the whole world. \n<<silently>>\n<<set $woodenkey = "no">>\n<<set $playerYouPower = 5>>\n<<set $playerDougePower = 5>>\n<<set $wand = "wood">>\n<<endsilently>>\n<<display 'Outside'>>
There is not much to see outside. There is the swinging sign in front of a [[heavy wooden door|Door]]. There are [[two decorative trees|Orange Trees]] flanking the door, each bearing ripe oranges. Behind you is a [[well-manicured lawn|Lawn]] that slopes gently towards the road. Going to the [[left|Left Path]] and the [[right|Right Path]] is a continuous stone path that disappears into the distance.
You raise your wand and cast a [[light spell|either("LightPlus3","LightMinus3","LightReg3")]].

You raise your wand and cast an [[air spell|either("AirPlus1","AirMinus1","AirReg")]].
You wait politely for Old Douge to say something. He finally looks up from his papers. The room is shaking so violently that it looks as if there are two Old Douges by the desk.\n\n"Oh, <<print $YourName>>, you're still here? Off you go! No one wants to be around during an Eraser attack; nasty things. No worries, the Poet will take care of it. I trust you know the way out?"\n\nYou nod and walk out of Room 301. You look up and see the paper raven. You could always [[follow it|Follow Raven]]. Or you could [[head out of the building|Head Out]].

You pick up a rock off the ground and fumble your way through the only linguistical magic you know. It's a simple trick that transfigures the stone using a naming spell. You have to borrow the boy's hat so you can drop the stone inside and yank out a rabbit.\n\nHe politely claps.\n\n"Would you like to see a bit of real magic?" he asks as you set down the rabbit and allow it to hop away.\n\nYou [[nod your head|Nod]].\nYou [[shake your head|Shake Your Head]].
Do you really want to walk down the path? That doesn't seem a good use of your time.\n\n<<display 'Outside'>>
<<silently>><<set $pencil = 1>><<endsilently>><<if visited() == 1>>You pick up the pencil and slide it into your pocket. The raven flutters far ahead of you, swooping down the stairwell wildly. <<if visited("Pith")>>Milo disappears the moment you walk through the door. The paper scrolls through the machine at breakneck speed, finally snapping off the roller and floating through the air like a kite until it lands carefully atop a pile of similar papers in the corner.\n\n"Can I help you?" she asks, not even looking at you as she feeds another paper into the machine.\n\n"I'm here for my interview. To get into Hawthorne Academy?"\n\n"Yes, yes, you'll be with Mr. Douge."\n\nYou know Mr. Douge. Everyone in town calls him Old Douge. He's a bit of an eccentric magician, very old with brittle, liver-spotted hands and knobby knuckles. Your stomach sinks thinking about how you're going to be interviewing with him. You'll probably have to shout for him to hear you.\n\n"Dear," she says. "You have a wand? Correct? You don't need to borrow a wand for the exam?"\n\n"Exam?" You question. You didn't know there was going to be an exam. You thought this was an interview; a talk. "Yes, I have a wand."\n\n"Anything else in your pockets? You can't bring anything into the room except your wand."\n\nYou feel around in your pockets, but the only thing there is the wooden key you picked up outside. You sort of want to keep it. After all, if you don't get in, this may be the only thing you get from the Hawthorne Academy of Incantations and Conjurations.\n\nDo you [[leave the key|Leave Key]]?\nOr do you [[pretend your pockets are empty|Keep Key]]?
You stumble across the hallway and step outside into the sunshine. You look up at the top of the school and see enormous, winged erasers taking chunks out of the roof. They skate across the surface, sending up clouds of eraser bits, while simultaneously making it fade.\n\nYou start down the lawn, back to the front gates, hoping that Old Douge will remember your performance on the exam and report it to the front office. That he doesn't keel over before he can tell them to send your acceptance letter. \n\nYou are finally done with Merrywethers. Finally done with basic, practically useless magic; knowing how to scour pots or light a room or find a missing object. Linguistical magic is important; words are important.\n\nYou give the school one last look as you duck through the wrought iron gate and head home to tell everyone you're in.\n\n<html><i>You can restart the game using the menu on the left sidebar.</i></html>
"Is there any chance you could fix my <<print $wand>> wand?" you ask hopefully. "Like is there some repairing charm you could do?"\n\n"I'm sorry," she says sympathetically.
